The Westmoreland Intermediate Unit offers a wide variety of high-quality, PDE-approved, graduate-level CPE credit courses to Pennsylvania educators during three academic terms each year: Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer.

Program Overview 

WIU CPE courses are offered fully online in an asynchronous format through our user-friendly and engaging Alludo learning platform.

WIU CPE courses are facilitated by qualified instructors

WIU CPE courses are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

  • Each WIU CPE course applies as Act 48 hours and as credits towards Level II Certification. Three-credit CPE courses count as 90 Act 48 hours and 3 CPE credits toward Level II certification. Two-credit CPE courses count as 60 Act 48 hours and 2 CPE credits toward Level II certification.
  • Educators can apply up to 18 CPE credits towards a Master's equivalency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I live/work outside of Westmoreland County. May I enroll in WIU CPE courses?
A. Yes!  All Pennsylvania educators are welcome to enroll in WIU CPE courses for the same enrollment fee as those who live and/or work in Westmoreland County.
 
Q. What is the enrollment fee for WIU CPE courses?
A. WIU CPE course fees are as follows: Three-credit courses = $350, Two-credit courses = $245.00.
 
Q. Do all of the WIU courses run?
A. Yes! A course is confirmed to be held once one person enrolls.
 
Q. Are WIU CPE Courses graded?
A. WIU CPE courses are PASS/FAIL. Letter grades are not assigned by instructors or recorded on transcripts/letters of completion.
 
Q. How many CPE credits will I earn per CPE course?
A. Each 3-credit WIU CPE course counts for all of the following:
  • 3 credits toward the 24 Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)-approved credits required to be earned within the first six years of teaching as part of the Level II Certification process
  • 90 Act 48 hours toward the 180 hours required to be earned every five years
  • Additionally, up to 18 WIU CPE credits (six three-credit courses) can be applied toward a Master's Equivalency Certification
 
Q. How are Act 48 hours and WIU CPE credits submitted to PDE?
A. Please review the following:
  • Upon completion of a WIU CPE course, you will receive a Letter of Course Completion with a raised seal from the WIU by U.S. mail. This letter is for your records. 
  • Upon completion of a WIU CPE course, Act 48 hours earned (90 Act 48 hours for a 3-credit course; 60 Act 48 hours for a 2-credit course) will be uploaded to PERMS by the WIU on your behalf. No action is required on your part.
  • If you have completed WIU CPE courses and are ready to submit those credits to PDE for a Level II application, follow the instructions in the Need a Transcript? section at the bottom of this webpage. Note: Prior to contacting us, start an application in TIMS for the CPE credits to be processed by PDE. If you have completed CPE courses outside of the WIU, you must request a transcript from that respective IU.  
 
Q. How can I check the status of my Act 48 hours and CPE credits?
A. Visit PDE’s Professional Education Record Management System (PERMS) to check the status of your personal records. You will need your PPID to access the information.

Need a Transcript (Letter of Course Completion)?

A Letter of Course Completion (i.e. transcript) is on file for all CPE courses completed at the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. Requests can be made for a hard copy to be issued to a student’s home address. Digital copies of a letter can be electronically submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (to support an application for Instructional II certification).
