WIU Receives Positive Review from Pennsylvania Bureau of Special Education

The Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU) has successfully completed its 2025–2026 IDEA Program Fiscal Review conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Bureau of Special Education.

The review examined WIU's administration, oversight, and management of regional IDEA-B School-Age funding, which supports special education services for eligible students with disabilities throughout Westmoreland County. Following its review, the Bureau determined that the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit is in compliance with the requirements for administering these federal funds.

In its report, the Bureau recognized the WIU's strong preparation throughout the review process, noting that staff provided documentation that was organized, informative, and responsive to the Bureau's requests.

Each year, the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit administers more than $10 million in regional IDEA-B funding on behalf of local school districts, ensuring that resources are managed responsibly and in accordance with state and federal requirements.

"We appreciate the Bureau's thorough review and the opportunity to demonstrate the systems and processes our team has in place to responsibly manage these important resources," said Dr. Jason Stragand, Interim Executive Director of the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. "Our focus remains on being a trusted partner to our school districts and ensuring that students with disabilities receive the high-quality supports and services they deserve."

The successful review reflects WIU's continued commitment to sound fiscal stewardship, regulatory compliance, and collaborative service to students, families, and school districts in Westmoreland County.
