GREENSBURG, PA — Knowing how to recognize when a young person may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge, and knowing what to do next, can make a meaningful difference. The Westmoreland Intermediate Unit (WIU) is offering monthly Youth Mental Health First Aid training to help community members build the knowledge and skills needed to support youth.
The next Youth Mental Health First Aid training will be held October 8th at the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. The eight-hour training is free for Westmoreland County residents. The cost for residents outside Westmoreland County is $45.
“Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is simply recognize that a young person may be struggling and know how to respond,” said Joe Rice, WIU Student Services Supervisor. “Youth Mental Health First Aid helps participants feel more prepared to have those conversations and connect young people and families with the support they need.”
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed for parents, caregivers, educators, youth-serving professionals and anyone who wants to support the well-being of young people. Participants learn how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, initiate supportive conversations and connect youth with appropriate resources.
The eight-hour training session includes Youth Mental Health First Aid certification upon completion, Training manual, and lunch. Full attendance is required to receive certification.
